WindyNation Solar Panel Kit Review

November, 2020

WindyNation currently offers a wide range of RV solar panel kits that are reliable and priced affordably. This solar panel kit by WindyNation is designed for RV use and works by harnessing the power of the sun’s rays in order to generate energy to run your appliances and devices. This kit comes with everything you need to produce clean energy. It’s not just for RV use, in fact, it can be used for cabins and boats as well, and it’s available for a reasonable price.

Our Verdict: This solar panel kit will work well for buyers in need of a system that can handle powering a few smaller appliances. Unfortunately, this system isn’t powerful enough to power major appliances such as an air conditioner. If you’re in need of more power you may need to keep looking, but if you want a simple solar panel system that can power phone and tablet chargers, fans, and other smaller appliances, then this model can save you plenty of cash in the long run. Overview and Features

This is a moderately priced kit that offers a decent amount of power for the price. It’s not powerful enough that you can solely depend on it for your power needs when you’re traveling, but it does work well in terms of providing just enough power to the battery to allow you to run an AC or a few sensitive electronic devices, all without draining the battery quickly.

This kit comes with a one-hundred-watt solar panel, forty feet of UL listed twelve AWG solar cable, LCD thirty-amp solar charge controller, MC4 connectors, battery temperature sensor, and mounting hardware.

The kit provides three hundred and fifty-watt hours of power, or thirty-three-amp hours daily. However, this can also heavily depend on how much sun the panel gets throughout the day. If you add more solar panels you can easily double the kit’s amp hours.

Charge Controller

The solar charge controls works as a type of battery regulator. It’s a device that will prevent the battery from overcharging. All batteries have a voltage capacity rating. When this capacity is exceeded, this will usually lead to serious damage to the battery, often requiring a replacement. This charge controller will work as a type of gate to the battery’s storage system and will ensure that serious damage to the battery is avoided by preventing battery overload.

Fortunately, this system comes with a top of the line charge controller, one that’s easy to use and loaded with some great features.

The charge controller features adjustable settings. A large LCD display will allow you to view voltage, DC load draw, battery state of charge, and solar panel status.

The twelve-volt battery and converter are included and are all you need to turn the sun’s energy into AC power.

The charge controller features mode down and up buttons that will allow you to adjust the settings for load disconnect, the voltage of solar disconnect, and more.

This controller is designed to provide multifunctional power management and charging for twelve and twenty-four-volt battery systems. It can detect function in order to identify the battery when connected.

It’s also equipped with built-in protection that will prevent short circuits and battery overload, in addition to surges, reverse polarity and discharges.

This will help the solar setup to remain undamaged even in the event of an overload or short circuit.

This kit is designed for a variety of applications. Whether you use it at home, in your RV or on a boat, installation is a breeze.

Depending on the weather conditions, this solar setup can generate up to three hundred and fifty-watt hours daily. The charge controller can handle up to four large one hundred watt solar panels, so you can expand this set later down the road.

This system works well for smaller applications and can easily supplement your power needs. However, considering the system’s limited power capabilities you should not solely rely on it for all of your power needs when traveling.

Solar Panel

This isn’t the largest kit on the market, but the single solar panel this set comes with is huge and designed for use with a twelve-volt system. This panel is perfect for charging a one hundred and twenty-volt battery bank. This solar panel is also 1703 UL certified and has a high efficiency rating. Even at low irradiance conditions and in high temperatures, this panel offers a top of the line performance.

The fact that it’s UL certified means that it has undergone testing by a third party to ensure that it provides a solid performance and doesn’t have any issues such as manufacturing defects.

Temperature Sensor

The battery comes equipped with a temperature sensor. The sensor is controlled by software and can easily and accurately adjust the voltage in order to get the most out of the battery’s life. This is a great feature to have and one you won’t find on other models in this price range. Combined with the charge controller, the temperature sensor will ensure the battery is not overloaded, thus saving permanent damage to your battery that would require a replacement somewhere down the line.

So, how to mount solar panels to RV roof?

The fastener set, and mounting bracket are made out of stainless-steel and anodized aluminum. They’re corrosion resistant and have a reputation for durability. There is a total of four sets of stainless-steel fasteners, four Z brackets, and four anodized brackets. These fasteners and brackets will allow you to easily and quickly mount the solar panel to your RV, boat, or home.

Basically, the manufacturer has thought of everything and included all the hardware you’ll need to get this system set up quickly.

The included user’s manual is loaded with helpful tips regarding mounting options and also includes step by step instructions that will allow you to get your new system up and running in under an hour.

Connectors and Cable

The twelve AWG extension cable is UL approved and measures in at forty feet long. It also comes with a pair of MC4 connectors. The connectors provide a watertight connection to the extension cable that’s attached directly to the back of the solar panel. These top notch cables and connectors provide a solid connection. Basically, you don’t have to worry about upgrading any of the hardware in this set.

While the manufacturer has marketed this set as a complete kit, some RV users felt that the kit lacked some equipment needed for a proper setup, such as fuses.

Since there are limitations on the amount of power this set can provide, you’ll only be able to use it in certain situations that don’t require much power. This is a mid-price set that’s perfect for people who only need to power up a couple of low voltage devices or appliances, but it’s simply not powerful enough to handle large electronics such as an air conditioner. For that, we recommend checking out the best camp generator.

However, if you’re not searching for the most powerful solar panel kit on the market, then this set can still be a great buy. The amount of power one panel offers is pretty impressive. While you may not be able to rely on this set as your sole means of power, it does allow you to save some serious cash during a long cross-country RV trip, especially if you make sure it gets an adequate amount of sun exposure daily.

While it can’t quite compare to the Renogy 400 Watts 12 Volts Monocrystalline Solar RV Kit, which offers significantly more power, for the price, this set is still a great choice if you’re on a tight budget and looking for a reasonably priced system.
